Q. How much should my baby be drinking?

A: This depends on the age of the child. A newborn may take 1-2 ounces every 3 hours, whereas a 2 month old may take 4-6 ounces at a feeding. A breast fed baby should be nursing at least 10-15 minutes per side as often as every 2 hours. If your child seems satisfied, and is wetting upwards of 6 diapers per day, plus 2or 3 dirty diapers per day, he is probably getting enough.

Q: My 1 year old is now off formula/breast . Does he need a vitamin?

A: If your child consumes a reasonably balanced diet, that is to say eats some breads ,meats fruits, vegetables, and dairy during the course of a day, then he does not need a supplement. If he consistently refuses any or all of these food, groups, then a multivitamin is a good idea.

Q: Why does my child get so many ear infections? What can I do to prevent
them?

A: Ear infections are most commonly a complication of colds, when they occur in young children. When a 5 year old gets a cold, he usually just gets the sniffles, but a 5 month old may develop an ear infection. This is because the 5 month old has a less mature drainage system behind the eardrum. Besides trying to minimize your infant's exposure to other children, avoiding cigarette smoke is very helpful, as is not "prop feeding" your child.
